Safer Internet Day 2026 was observed at Dera Natung Government College (DNGCI), Itanagar, on Tuesday, 10 February 2026, through an awareness programme initiated by the National Informatics Centre (NIC) and organized in collaboration with DNGCI. The programme aimed to promote safe, responsible, and ethical use of the internet and emerging digital technologies, particularly Artificial Intelligence (AI).
Dr. M. Q. Khan, Principal of DNGCI, addressed the gathering and stressed the importance of responsible and mindful use of the internet. He cautioned that a significant portion of online information can be misleading and warned against excessive screen time and internet addiction, particularly among students. He urged learners to maintain a healthy balance between digital engagement and real-life activities. He reminded the audience that the internet should remain a tool for empowerment rather than control.
Dr. Tarh Achi, Assistant Professor, Department of Physics, DNGCI, and Coordinator of the event. In his address, he highlighted the increasing role of the internet in everyday life and emphasized the need for awareness regarding cyber threats, online fraud, data privacy issues, and misinformation.
A PPT presentation was delivered by Shri Rajendra Prasad, Joint Director, NIC State Unit, Itanagar, focusing on emerging cyber safety challenges associated with Artificial Intelligence. He discussed the global significance of Safer Internet Day and highlighted risks related to AI applications in healthcare and smart transportation, stressing the need for ethical AI development and strong cybersecurity frameworks.
Another presentation was delivered by Shri Pinak Pani Nath, Consultant, Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), on the theme “Smart Tech, Safe Choices: Exploring the Safe and Responsible Use of AI.” He elaborated on various cyber threats such as phishing, online fraud, deepfake scams, identity theft, and digital arrest frauds. He also informed participants about cyber hygiene practices, reporting mechanisms, and key Government of India initiatives including CERT-In, Cyber Swachhta Kendra, and the Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023.
The final presentation was delivered by Shri Digvijay Singh Thakur, Consultant, MeitY, who highlighted ethical issues related to AI usage, deepfake technology, AI-enabled scams, algorithmic bias, and data privacy concerns. He encouraged participants to verify online content and use AI tools responsibly.
The programme concluded with a vote of thanks by Shri Devender, STA, NIC, in the presence of Shri Y. Linngi, Senior Director, NIC. The event witnessed active participation from students and faculty members and successfully enhanced awareness about safer internet practices in the digital age.
